The public comment period for Alice Springs Airport's 2009 Preliminary Draft Master Plan and the 2009 Preliminary Airport Enviornment Strategy closed on 24 November 2009.
Alice Springs Airport Pty Ltd (ASA) holds a 50 year lease plus 49 year option over the Alice Springs Airport from the Commonwealth of Australia under the Airports Act 1996. Alice Springs Airport is the major Central Australian airport. It provides facilities for the local community, tourists, and other visitors to Central Australia, air services for remote communities, the Joint Defence Research Facility at Pine Gap, and other recreational activities.
The 2009 Master Plan and the 2009 Airport Environment Strategy (AES) retain the fundamental concepts of the 1999 and 2004 Plans. The changes that have been made largely refelct:
- the modest growth projections of aviation activity;
- the devolving aviation industry structure including low cost carriers;
- the potential to diversify airport income by expanding the property portfolio;
- the evolving Airport business, the needs of business partners and impact on the community.
The 20 year Master Plan provides a 2029 development concept for long term development as an airport with an optimal mix of aeronautical and non aeronautical uses. The Master Plan assists and encourages progressive, orderly and strong growth of the airport land.
The AES outlines how we will build on our enviornmental achievements and continue to put systems in place to meet our environmental aspirations over the next 5 years and into the future. The AES provides the mechanisms to both better manage our enviornmental risks and further integrate and embed sustainable environmental management into every aspect of our business.
In accordance with Section 79 and 124 of the Airports Act 1996 public comment was sought on both the Preliminary Draft Master Plan and Preliminary Draft Airport Environment Strategy for a period of 60 business days.
Public comment on both documents closed on Tuesday 24th November 2009.
Alice Springs Airport Enviornment Strategy 2009 was approved by the Federal Minister on 22 April 2009. The AES will be made available to the public within 50 business days of the approval.
The Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government is currently reviewing the Alice Spring Airport Master Plan documentation; the Airport will make this document available when approved.
